The real problems of our presence and future are not economic or technical, they are philosophical. Our society of unbridled materialism is being challenged by the increasing destruction of our planet. We take pleasure in ambition, in competition, in acquiring knowledge or power, position, prestige or status, living a life of materialistic incentives. The pursuit of pleasure as ambition, competition, greed, envy, domination or power is respectable in a society which is fundamentaly misled by one concept: consumption is wealth. You can be ambitious, be greedy, violent, competitive, you can be a ruthless human being and society accepts, because at the end of your ambition, you are either so called successful with plenty of belongings, or a failure and therefore a frustrated human being.
To transform the world, we must begin with ourselves, with our very own intention. Our intention must be to understand ourselves, not to leave it to others to transform themselves. This is our responsibility, yours and mine. Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed. Material wealth do not last forever, but that which probably lasts forever is the wealth of intelligence and creativity.
