When Graffiti and Hip-Hop first arrived in Germany in the early 1980s, the phenomenon was still new. There were virtually no places where artists could spray legally and peacefully. There were no commissions, the culture was new, and it was largely unknown to the majority of society. Over the past 40 years, our culture has transformed immensely. It has grown and connected globally, becoming more diverse and arguably the largest art movement in history. Spray paint manufacturers have adapted to the needs of writers and artists, countless tools and tricks have emerged, and both businesses and municipalities have recognized the potential of our culture. It was only a matter of time before graffiti and style writing received the respect they deserve.
For several years now, cities, municipalities, and even Deutsche Bahn have shown an increasing willingness to allow creative expression and give our culture space to help shape public areas. Although legal projects remain controversial within the community (“Graffiti must be illegal”), offering legal painting spaces is the result of 40 years of development in Germany and a sign of recognition and respect.
Meeting of Styles is now introducing a series of smaller beautification projects. Under ‘Style Matters,’ we present projects aimed at enhancing public spaces and everyday life. These projects are either too small for an official MOS or are not suitable for a public event due to their specific locations. This is also why we cannot always publish exact locations.
At this train station, there are pieces that have been around for nearly 15 years, which the local organization would have liked to preserve. Unfortunately, this is not possible because the entire station, including the walls, needs complete renovation. All surfaces will be primed as part of the renovation, and the old, valuable graffiti pieces will have to make way, creating fresh space for new works. This wall is offers space for about 40 artists on both sides, appox 300m long, 2.8m high on two sides of the tracks.
The plan: to bring artists and crews from different countries together with local heros to create a large piece of art. The local organizers provide paint and participation or coverage of travel expenses, but no accommodation.
