Ed Hicks was in photorealist pioneers 54 from 2002 and has been a constant fixture of the London street art scene since 2005 winning the UK secret walls art battle in ’09.
After which he moved away from character work. His murals these days consist of large non figurative paintings evoking the sublime landscapes of the mid gothic period. Fire, brimstone, sunsets and eruptions, shot through with illumination. The work stands oddly apart from what most do today as reaction against the ubiquity of post-modern pop iconography.
“The thing is, too much street and not enough art, beauty is not pretty… its terrifying, you have to actually feel something, like… romanticism and stuff you know? Ok well there you go.”
