Alepsis Hernandez is a Long Beach-based artist who works primarily with aerosol and house paint. Her black-and-white portraiture conveys complex ideas and emotions, including love, loss, and hope. Removing color adds a profound feeling to the work and forces the viewer to slow down and process the subject matter. It allows for natural colors found in urban cities to pop. Occasionally, the artist will add a singular color. Her process includes photographing snippets of her surroundings and people in her community. In 2019, Hernandez collaborated with Los Angeles Metro to create a painting that was digitally displayed at stops along the Blue Line and on TAP ride cards. The County of Los Angeles awarded her a Commendation Award for her participation in El Montes community mural project in 2021. Her past clients include Chevrolet, Stiiizy, LA Galaxy, Nike, and Private Sneakers. Last year, she was selected as a muralist for Nam Jam Mural Festival in Da Nang, Vietnam. Recently, Hernandez was awarded a Professional Artist Fellowship Grant through the Long Beach Arts Council.
