MonkYi (Julia Yihan) is a Toronto-based, 2nd-generation Chinese-Canadian muralist and street artist whose work explores folklore, mythology, and cultural heritage through the lens of shared human experience. Her imagery sits between beauty and strangeness, shifting between mythic, spiritual figures and more raw, instinctive, and playful forms.
Working primarily with aerosol, MonkYi creates site-specific murals, live paintings, and community-engaged public art in public spaces, festival settings, and educational contexts. Her practice continues to evolve toward mythic and culturally rooted visual languages informed by years of living, working, and traveling across Canada and Asia, while remaining responsive to context, audience, and place.
